NEW YORK — A man from the New York City area has been charged with illegally selling an illegal prescription drug, Viagra, in the U. S. The drug was first sold to men in the United States in 1998 and then approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
The man, John Smith, 24, of Brooklyn, New York, was charged Monday at his home and was charged with selling the drug, Pfizer said in a statement. The man also was charged with misbranding the drug, which is a prescription drug used to treat erectile dysfunction.
Smith, of Manhattan, said the man was not the owner of the drug and that his pharmacy was not involved in the drug sales. In his statement, Smith said he was buying the drug from a source who was not involved in the drugs. He said he sold the drug on the Internet. Smith, who is the owner of a chain of pharmacies in New York City, said he had not been able to purchase the drug.
Smith said he would not be held accountable for any crimes related to the drug. "Our team is here to protect you and help you protect the American people and their families," Smith said in a statement.
He has not yet spoken with the press but said he did not know the full extent of the drug's use, but that he would make an announcement on Monday.
The FDA has not approved Viagra, Pfizer said in a statement. However, the company is reviewing the issue, and will update its website when it becomes available.
